Summary^

Develop a series of libraries to accommodate a standard parser. The end goal is to be able to parse reStructuredText and Markdown into a standard AST for use in further processing.

Motivation^

Markdown and reStructuredText are the primary markup languages used in documentation and could be the primary markup languages used in creative writing. There is ample opportunity for tooling around these languages, but most parsers are built in heavy interpreted languages to specific purposes like rendering to HTML.

The goal of this initiative is to develop a low-level parser that can surface data from reStrucutredText and Markdown for use by future tools, such as renderers, task and project managers, literate programming workflows, et cetera.

Targets^

  • Implement a standard logger.

  • Implement a standard reader.

  • Implement a tree-sitter parser to perform the initial parse of supported formats.

  • Implement a postparser to process tree-sitter data and return a standard data structure.
