Tools are not the same as products. A tool has a function and purpose and neither of these have anything to do with market interests or monetization strategies for the business. Too often in recent years we’ve reached for a tool expecting it to be a tool still and found instead that after recent updates its makers now treat it as a product and this treatment has led to a general degradation in its value to the user.

The principal goal of Autotelic Toolworks is to develop quality command-line tools for writers and developers working on Linux and macOS. By and large, we are toolwrights and we make tools because it’s challenging and fun, and because the tools themselves add value to our own lives and workflows.

Our tools to date are written in C with source code available at Codeberg under the AGPL license.
